BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — College Dr. is known for its major traffic problems but there may be a solution on the way. The Department of Public Works has an idea to fix the traffic problem on College Dr., especially close to the interstate.
“Something needs to be done to this whole Lee Dr," said driver, Andrew Brooks.
“It’s just a lot of traffic here,” noted driver, Gail Cope.” Personally, I try and avoid it.”
Locals say the traffic on College is a nightmare.
“It’s the busiest street in town," said driver, Jimmy Curry.
One of the biggest concerns is that you have to get on the highway from the wrong side of the road.
“They was very confusing because your used to going left and getting on the interstate to go in the direction you think your going to go in," said Cope.
But those problems might soon be solved and in a very unique way. It’s called a diverging diamond interchange. Essentially you would drive on the opposite side of the road, and then enter the highway. It would add lanes and ramps to the intersection alleviating congestion and hopefully traffic.
Local drivers say this is something that could eliminate a lot of stress.
“As a driver that would be a good thing i would be happy,” noted Curry.
“I would love that,” said Brooks. “Any relief would be good.”
Cope says it’s an idea that could potentially make traveling easier for everyone.
"I wouldn't mind coming through here and you have to remember the LSU traffic figures in and game day and what it must be like for all the out of town people.”
But she’s still concerned with one thing.
“I think the diamond could be a benefit for this area however the construction is going to be a nightmare."
We contacted DPW for some figures about the proposed project but have not heard back. As for when the changes are expected, we're told the project, if approved, wouldn't even begin for another two years.
