BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — BP has issued a warning; if you inflated your claims with the corporation after the giant spill in the Gulf of Mexico, it's coming after you. The oil company placed full-page ads in national newspapers.
In the ad, BP said some Louisiana residents were encouraged by politicians and attorneys to claim their losses from the oil spill were "bigger" than they actually were.
The ads placed in the major newspapers read, in part, "Whatever you think about BP, we can all agree that it's wrong for anyone to take money they don't deserve."
BP has been working to reclaim some compensation payments it calls "illogical and absurd," saying the claims administrator is misinterpreting a settlement agreement.
Jim Roy, Plantiff's Steering Commission member, gave this statement:
"The court has rejected BP's argument multiple times. Simply put, BP has buyers' remorse because it guessed wrong on the cost of a deal, which it -- for nearly two years -- negotiated, co-authored, agreed to and sought court approval of. The notion that BP is somehow trying to portray itself as a victim is preposterous."
BP has already paid out more than $42 billion in fines following the 2010 Gulf oil explosion and spill.
