BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The National Center for Disaster Fraud says it's already had more than two dozen calls to report suspected fraud from Hurricane Isaac.
The agency, led by U.S. attorney Don Cazayoux, said they've dealt with tens of thousands of complaints since Hurricane Katrina. Many of those investigations have led to getting money out of the hands of people just looking to cash in, and into the hands of the real victims of storm damage.
“We want the true victims to obtain the money that they need to recover from the storm,” said Cazayoux. “Every dollar that a person that defrauds the system of is one dollar less that the victims can have - that's why we're committed.”
The agency has handled calls dealing with Katrina, the BP oil spill, other catastrophes across the country, and now Isaac.
