CLINTON, LA (NBC33) — A 38-year-old woman drowned this afternoon as she attempted to rescue her 9-year-old child.
The East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that Martha Dartt of Denham Springs was visiting the home of a friend with her 3 children on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The home is located near on the bank of the Amite River near the parish line.
“The 9-year-old child swam out too far and was in a deep area,” Sgt. Kevin Garig explained. “The woman got to the child and pushed the child back to safety, but she was not able to get back.”
Sgt. Garig explained that Dartt was not a strong swimmer. She went under at roughly 4:00 p.m. and her body was recovered roughly 1 hour later.
“The family has been notified and the children were taken into the custody of their father,” Sgt. Garig noted. “The coroner has ruled the death an accidental drowning.”
