ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA — A Bogalusa mother and her three children are safe due to the heroic actions of several passing motorists following a non-contact hit-and-run crash on Saturday evening.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the incident happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. on LA 21 near the Bogue Chitto River Bridge. We’re told Mary Woodward, 37, of Covington, was driving in the right lane when an unknown black sedan approached. Witnesses say the vehicle was speeding and attempted to pass several vehicles, including Woodward. That’s when she was forced off the road.
Woodwar’s car ended up in the flooded river embankment at the base of the bridge. The car began to sink immediately after it crashed.
Passing motorists, James Garner and his fiancée Sue Ann Barkman, stopped and ran over to help. The couple pulled Woodward and her children from the rising water before the vehicle fully submerged.
Officials say several other good Samaritans helped with the rescue as well.
Woodward’s vehicle was finally pulled from the water on Thursday, Jan. 17.
