The Mayor of Independence will remain in office after a vote failed this morning to remove him.

On Monday, Oct. 1 a resolution issued by the town Board of Aldermen called for a temporary leave of absence by Mayor Michael Ragusa. The resolution was issued after Mayor Ragusa was arrested for charges that include Public Intimidation, Battery of a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest.

All of the charges stem from an altercation that happened last August with Independence police officer Jeannie Cruz.

Officer Cruz filed her complaint against the Mayor after she says he interfered in a traffic stop involving the Mayor's son. The officer claims Ragusa used profanities as he slammed the door of her police unit. She says she had to physically kick the door open to get out.

NBC33’s Kris Cusanza was at that meeting. She will have the full details about that vote as well as reactions from the community coming up on NBC33 News at 5:00 p.m.
