Mayor Holden: Chief White is still an employee of the City of Baton Rouge

A week has passed since Mayor Holden fired Baton Rouge Police Chief Dewayne White. Although Holden has not issued a formal statement regarding the reason for his termination, he did send a letter to White with points of clarification.

In the letter Mayor Holden says that Chief White is still an employee of the City of Baton Rouge. Instead, he says that his termination has been “recommended” and he is currently on “paid administrative leave of absence through Monday, Feb. 18.”

Representatives with the Baton Rouge Police Department did not make that distinction on Wednesday, Feb. 6 after White was issued the "letter of termination." It happened hours after both White and Holden were seen at a press conference discussing gun safety and recent accidental shootings.

The day after news broke about the "termination" White revealed he had hired lawyer Jill Craft several weeks prior due to rumors. He held a press conference to announce that he planned to appeal the decision at a Civil Service Board meeting, which is scheduled to occur on Monday, Feb. 18.

Craft says the allegations made by Mayor Holden in the letter issued to White today are “ridiculous.”

NBC33 News has contacted Mayor Holden’s office several times but have not yet received a return phone call.
