The Mayor’s Recycling Director Susan Hamilton is one of 12 women to receive the 2013 Rosie Award from Waste & Recycling News for work in the recycling, waste and sustainability industries.

In announcing the award, the Waste and Recycling News noted that under Hamilton’s leadership, the Baton Rouge recycling program has grown from a grassroots volunteer drop-off program that collected 5,000 tons of material in 1989 to a community-wide, single-stream curbside recycling, organics recycling and waste reduction program that is expected to divert nearly 200,000 tons from the local landfill this year.

The publication called Hamilton “the mother of the Louisiana Earth Day,” noting that under her guidance, the event has grown to become one of the largest environmental festivals in the United States.
