The costumes, glitter and pageantry of Mardi Gras is going to the highest bidder.

The Mardi Gras Museum in Kenner closed in 2011 due to money problems, and organizers said everything inside, from costumes to small floats to faux jewels, must go.

"In the 1990s the place was booming, so it's a loss to people interested in (the) history of (the) carnival," Mardi Gras expert Arthur Hardy said.

Hardy said the extensive collection of Mardi Gras memorabilia will go to whoever bids the highest.

Some residents are looking to take home a piece of carnival history, including people from the famous Mardi Gras World in New Orleans, who said it's important to keep key pieces in the carnival family.

"I'm looking for artifacts, things for display in the gift shop and café we opened so people can enjoy it at Mardi Gras World," said Mark Aguilar of Mardi Gras World.

Kenner city leaders said the Rivertown area has been struggling for a while.

Ken Marroccoli from the Department of Parks and Recreation said it's hard to see businesses close down.

"We're going to try to consolidate (the) science center and museums and have a magazine street feel, but (our) smaller version goal is to revitalize the entire area," Marroccoli said.
