J. Michael Desmond, author, professor and architect, will join Foundation for Historical Louisiana (FHL) members and guests as the featured speaker in its Heritage Lecture series on Thursday, July 18, at 6:00 p.m. at the Old Governor's Mansion.

The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include a book signing immediately following.

Desmond will discuss and sign his latest publication, “The Architecture of LSU," an LSU Press publication. The lecture will trace the university’s architectural development, highlighting the contributions of key historical figures and the genealogies of the campus’ architecture and planning. Desmond will show the far-reaching rewards of public environments that integrate natural and constructed elements to meet both practical and aesthetic goals. The book includes a wealthy collection of photographs, plans, drawings and maps. Desmond says the $180,000 Campus Heritage grant he and his colleagues received in 2006 from the Getty Foundation in Los Angeles was crucial to the book’s creation. “These grants were designed to help colleges and universities create historic preservation plans,” says Desmond. The book captures the fundamentals of American college campus design. "It is a primer of architectural principles."

Desmond has taught architectural history and design for 25 years. An architect, he earned his doctorate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his master’s degree of architecture in urban design from Harvard University, and his bachelor’s degree of architecture from LSU. Dr. Desmond is the Emogene Pliner Professor for the LSU School of Architecture.

The lecture is free for FHL members and $10 for guests. The event will be held in the East Room of the Old Governor’s Mansion at 502 North Boulevard in Baton Rouge. Individuals are urged to pre-register for the event via or by phone at 225-387-2464. Calandro’s Select Cellars and Fine Wines will host the reception.
