Did you know that according to the Internal Revenue Service, there are an estimated 984,400 taxpayers who have not filed their federal return for 2009, and therefore haven’t claimed their refund?

The IRS estimates that more than half of the unfiled returns are due a refund of greater than $500. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service reminds taxpayers who haven’t filed a 2009 tax return that the time to act is now – before the tax season ends on April 15, 2013 taking with it the chance to claim this money.

“The IRS offers a three-year window for filing a federal tax return, and for the 2009 tax year the cut-off date is right around the corner,” explained John Owens, a district manager with offices in the Baton Rouge area. “In addition to the money that taxpayers may be owed, they may also qualify for tax credits such as the Earned Income Credit worth as much as $5,657, Child Tax Credit, and American Opportunity Credit. That money is just waiting to be claimed. If you haven’t filed for 2009, spend the time now. This is your money and it will become property of the U.S. Treasury after April 15.”

There are taxpayers in all 50 states who are potentially owed refunds from 2009. Taxpayers in Arkansas are owed $17,843. For taxpayers who think that they had too little income to require filing, they should consider that they likely had money withheld from their employment that is now available to them as a refund. Taxpayers will not incur any late filing penalty and will be able to receive their refund if they file a return by April 15, 2013. Jackson Hewitt reminds taxpayers that their refund checks may be held if they haven’t filed their 2010 and 2011 returns so they should file these as well.

As a final reminder, the refunds due on unfiled 2009 returns will not be available for returns filed after April 15, 2013 so file now.
