Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Dozens of HIV and AIDS advocates marched on the State Capitol today as part of Louisiana AIDS Network Action Day.
Today, however, marchers were hoping to persuade lawmakers to support Medicaid expansion. The group comes to the Capitol yearly, but this time around they say they've got a different agenda.
Even though the governor is making it very clear he's not supporting Medicaid expansion, the group is hoping it can sway those who represent them.
"The Governor has already stepped back from one of his initiatives, and that was on tax reform,” said Enrique Moresco with the LA AIDS Advocacy Network. “He said that people were not ready for that. We are here today to tell the Governor if he's going to send it to the people, the people want Medicaid expansion."
The group also came to the Capitol to help educate others about the AIDS virus. Here in Louisiana, new infection rates from HIV continue to rise - it's a trend not reflected in the rest of the country.
