Baton Rouge, LA — Planetarium professionals and astronomers alike will flood the downtown streets as the Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) hosts the 2012 International Planetarium Society Conference (IPS) July 22 through July 26. The conference will take place at LASM’s Irene Pennington Planetarium, The Baton Rouge River Center, and other downtown venues.
July 23 at 9 AM, LASM will invite the media to the opening ceremony where Planetarium Director Jon Elvert and IPS President Dave Weinrich, alongside Mayor Kip Holden and Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne, will welcome delegates and IPS guests to Baton Rouge.
IPS is the largest planetarium society in the world. Established in 1970, its network of over 700 individuals and institutions involved in astronomy education and public outreach fosters the sharing of ideas so that its members can better serve their community. Members represent schools, universities, museums, and public facilities of all sizes.
IPS2012 – Bridge to New Beginnings – will explore the latest advancements in astronomy, planetarium theater management and technology, while providing an ideal forum for the exchange of ideas. In addition, the conference will showcase exhibition and vendor halls, professional development sessions, and renowned national and international keynote speakers, including: Dr. Rolf Landua from CERN; Dr. Michael S. Turner from the University of Chicago; and Dr. Natalie Batalha of the NASA Kepler Mission. New to this year’s conference is the “Dome Village,” where 20 portable planetariums of various sizes will be grouped together for educational demonstrations.
The biennial conference will not only benefit its attendees, but will also have a substantial economic impact to Baton Rouge of nearly a half-million dollars. More than 500 international delegates and their families, who represent over 40 participating countries, are expected to experience the venues, restaurants, and culture of Baton Rouge.
