ST FRANCISVILLE, La (NBC33) — A state judge denied the request of two of the men accused of murdering an Louisiana state penitentiary security guard.
The attorneys for Angola inmates Barry Edge and David Mathis asked the judge presiding in this first degree murder case to select jurors from another parish, not St. Tammany.
Judge Jerome Winsberg said the two attorneys did not supply enough evidence that their clients could not get an fair trial from St. Tammany parish jurors.
Several St. Tammany Parish judges wrote letters supporting the inmates request, because they say the parish court system could not handle the two trials.
The two men's attorneys plan to appeal this decision.
Edge and Mathis are part of the 'Angola five' accused of killing security guard Capitan David C. Knapps during an escape attempt in December of 2009.
