Hurricane Gustav hits three year anniversary, mayor looks back

Baton Rouge is looking back at Hurricane Gustav, which made landfall three years ago today.

The storm hit near Cocodrie, but the Capital City still saw devastating effects from the storm.

Power outages, downed trees, and damage to homes became a common thing to see days even weeks after the storm.

Although the storm was only a Category 1 storm by the time it made landfall, 34 parishes declared their respective parishes “Disaster Areas”. 48 people in Louisiana lost their lives during Gustav in 2008, including two in Baton Rouge.

Mayor-President Kip Holden says it's a day he'll never forget. Holden, along with other city leaders, put a curfew in place for approximately a week.

He tells NBC33 News Gustav was a lesson for both Baton Rouge and the people that call the city home.

"You have to be prepared for any contingencies," said the mayor.
