New Orleans, La (NBC33) — In Orleans Parish, the sheriff shutting down a jail, the House of Detention, that holds more than 600 prisoners.
The prisoners will now be moved to different prisons across the state.
Parish officials call the move long overdue. Last month, federal marshals removed inmates from the facility, and yesterday the Department of Justice released a report about the high number of sexual incidents inside the jail, citing “a culture of sexual violence” there.
The feds also found the facility understaffed and outdated.
