Martina Andrews and eight of her loved ones are lucky to be alive after a massive blaze destroyed their home on Governor Davis Drive around three this morning.

"The grandmother was on the couch and smelled something and heard something.  She looked and the stove was on fire, then she tried to get them all out and they would not wake up until eventually she got them out just in time.  By the time the last one ran out, the parts started falling in" says neighbor David Ingalls.

The Red Cross and their team of volunteers stepped in immediately to help out the family in any way they could, but it's more than just food and clothing

"It's so disorienting. What are you going to do?  You're just sitting and watching your home, a place that you love, a place that you stay with your family, a safe place, and it's not that anymore. That comfort that these volunteers can provide means so much." says Red Cross spokesperson Nancy Malone.

And Malone says that with the spike in house fires, they need all the assistance they can get to help out other families like Andrew's,

"So when people donate in advance it means there are resources here to help pick these families up and most importantly there are volunteers here to put their arms around them and give them the encouragement they need to pick up."
