BATON ROUGE, La (SU) — The Southern University Marching Band has been selected as the top marching band among the nation’s historically black colleges, according to a national news magazine website.
HBCU Digest listed SU’s “Human Jukebox” as the number one marching band, outranking rivals Florida A&M University’s “Marching 100,” Jackson State University’s “Sonic Boom of the South,” Grambling State University’s Tiger Marching Band and the Bethune-Cookman University “Marching Wildcats.”
“To even be mentioned in the same breath as these great marching bands is something to treasure,” said Director of Bands Lawrence Jackson. “To be considered the best is an awesome payoff for the hours of sacrifice invested by our young men and women.”
Southern’s marching band “is among the most decorated marching bands of all time…,” HBCU Digest said in its description of SU. The band has welcomed three U.S. presidents to office, played at five Super Bowls and most notably welcomed the New Orleans Saints back to the Superdome for the first time since Hurricane Katrina, the magazine said.
Jackson, a former Jukebox member himself, said the marching has had to be innovative in the past several years to “maintain the legacy of the great band directors and members before me.”
“I am honored that someone would consider our band as the best HBCU band in the country,” Jackson said. “This is a tribute to the hard work of my staff and the student musicians that we are extremely blessed to have at Southern University.”
HBCU Digest said marching bands have been the source of pride among HBCUs. “Their precision, entertainment value and high-energy bring goodwill and acclaim to black colleges,” the Digest said.
The online magazine listed what it called “five of the top programs in today’s HBCU culture. The top five are:
1. Southern University Human Jukebox
2. Florida A&M University Marching 100
3. Bethune-Cookman University Marching Wildcats
4. Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band
5. Jackson State University Sonic Boom of the South
