Gonzales, La (NBC33) — The Ascension Parish Veteran's Parade rolled through Gonzales Sunday. Crowds lined the streets, showing support for those who've served, and those who still serve, during this holiday season.
"There's a lot of families who wish they could have their loved one home," said Austin Granger, a National Guard Specialist. "And to see this support of our troops is a great honor."
Granger was deployed to Iraq last year for a 10-month mission with his National Guard unit. He came out Sunday with his niece and nephew's for the parade. Military service is something that runs deep in his family.
"I know how much it means to me, people stepping up and showing support," said Granger's brother, Ryan Granger. "Our boys over there are not on vacation. They're serving our country."
A former Marine himself, Ryan is especially happy to see the crowds on a Sunday when the Saints are playing a division rival.
"To see these guys give up the Saints and a Sunday afternoon watching football all to come support, shows you the love for troops, and appreciation," Granger said.
A flyover by military jets from the Belle Chase Naval Air Station, capped off the second annual Ascension parade, but destined to become long-standing annual tradition.
