Friends say missing teacher's husband was abusive
BRUSLY, La (NBC33) — There is still no sign of the Brusly High School teacher who went missing nearly two months ago. Now, friends are opening up about the rocky relationship with her husband leading up to her disappearance.
Karen Wooley and Sylviane Lozada have been close friends for years. That's one of the reasons why Sylviane confided in Karen about her relationship with her husband, Oscar.
"One minute, he's a good person and the next minute, he's a madman. And those were her exact words" Karen explains.
Karen says Sylviane told her that Oscar was abusive and controlling. "The yelling, the hitting, the emotional abuse. He was tracking her. Wherever she went, he was there."
Other friends say Sylviane was very private, but she hinted that something might have been wrong with her relationship. "She said, 'Do me a favor. I'm okay, everything's okay, but you need to do me a favor. Always remember December 31st."
According to the sheriff's office, Sylviane had to go to the hospital that day last year, after Oscar allegedly hit her and hurt her back.
Another friend says she caught Oscar yelling at Sylviane during a phone call. "He started screaming into the phone," says Libby Neighbor. "He became so angry in seconds."
Deputies say Oscar flew to Venezuela just days after Sylviane's disappearance. Friends and family haven't heard from him in a few weeks.
"He needs to come back from Venezuela or wherever he is and answer questions, and explain some things," says Liza Whittington, a friend of Sylviane's.
Now, concerns are mounting, the longer Sylviane's mystery remains unsolved. "I want everyone to know about this man," says Karen. "Everone should watch out fro him because he is dangerous and he's proven that."
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is still investigating the case. They say Oscar cannot be extradited back to the United States just for questioning.
