Fraudulent claims already being spotted related to Hurricane Isaac
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A national organization headquartered here in Baton Rouge says they're already busy with fraudulent claims stemming from Hurricane Isaac.
The National Center for Disaster Fraud says it's already had more than two dozen calls to report suspected fraud. The agency is led by U.S. Attorney Don Cazayoux. They've dealt with tens of thousands of complaints since Hurricane Katrina. Many of those investigations have let to getting money out of the hands of people just looking to cash in, and into the hands of the real victims of storm damage.
“We want the true victims to obtain the money that they need to recovery from the storm and so every dollar that a person that defrauds the system of is one dollar less that the victims can here - so that's why we're committed,” U.S. Attorney Don Cazayoux, explained.
The agency has handled calls dealing with Katrina, the BP oil spill, other catastrophes across the country, and now Isaac.
