BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) —
Four adults and two children got out of their home safely after it caught fire last night around 10 p.m. in the 700 block of Castlewood Drive in Baton Rouge.
Baton Rouge firefighters say someone left a pot on the stove, and the family left the house. They estimate about $300,000 worth of damage.
Red Cross volunteers gave the family's children stuffed animals, and provided temporary assistance, like food and shelter.
Then, two separate fire cases happened on Monday, January 2. No one was injured in either case, but Baton Rouge firefighters are investigating one as a suspected case of arson.
The first incident happened today at an apartment complex on Blvd. De Province at 7:45 a.m. We’re told the occupant of the apartment smelled smoke and was able to get out of the home in time.
The fire seems to have started in the bedroom, but investigators have yet to determine an exact cause. However, they do not believe there was any foul play.
The other incident, however, is strongly considered to be a case of arson.
A call came in just after 5:30 a.m. that an abandoned house on Beechwood Street.
Several rooms in the home were damaged before firefighters got the blaze under control. It took seven fire units and four pumps to get it contained. Fortunately, no one was inside the home and it did not spread to any neighboring homes.
The Fire Investigations Division is investigating the case on Beechwood. If you know anything about this potential crime, call (225) 354-1419 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP (7867).
