LIVINGSTON, LA (NBC33) — Livingston Parish says it still has not been reimbursed for money it spent on debris removal after Hurricane Gustav.
But according to parish president Layton Ricks, a rumor that the parish wasn't going to clean up any debris until it had a guarantee from FEMA that it would get paid is entirely false.
Ricks said Thursday that debris cleanup will start soon.
He said his office reached agreement with a contractor Wednesday, and says the paperwork should be finished Friday.
He advised that residents who have debris in their yard remain patient. Debris removal likely will not start for another week.
The first reason for the delay is that some southern parts of the parish are still underwater. The water level has to drop more before residents can even collect the debris, let alone get rid of it.
Secondly, the parish wants crews to only have to make one trip to each neighborhood. Waiting a little longer gives residents even more time to make sure they get everything that was left behind, in addition to keeping costs down.
