Some faculty members say the school is on the brink of a huge financial emergency.

The administration is asking faculty to take ten percent in furloughs and shorter termination notices to help make up the difference. The chancellor says these changes are necessary because the budget shortfall is greater than originally expected.

Southern University professor Diola Bagayoko believes though it is a lack of leadership on the part of the administration that has gotten the school into this financial mess,"The failure of the administration to recruit effectively, the failure to have an effectively staffed recruitment office and effectively staffed financial aid office and similarly for the registrar's office.

Bgayoko says the faculty supports the furloughs as long as the administration receives similar furloughs.
