BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Update 5:20pm: Stephanie Cargile with ExxonMobil Baton Rouge has told NBC33 they expect no more flaring as all equipment has been repaired, and thanks all residents for their patience and understanding.
Here is an update concerning calls to our newsroom about flares seen at the Exxon refinery. Stephanie Cargile with ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Public & Government Affairs Manager stressed this is not an emergency situation.
We notified our near neighbors of the situation to apologize for any inconvenience. The Refinery is flaring at this time due to minor equipment malfunction. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our neighbors and are working to remedy the situation as quickly as possible. This is not an emergency situation, but we have notified appropriate agencies as a precaution. There has been no external impact to the community. Flares are environmentally approved safety devices intended to burn off virtually all of the hydrocarbons that cannot be processed during a unit shutdown, slowdown or restart.
