BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: Divers have located the vehicle submerged in the creek. The vehicle was flipped over and was pulled out of the water. Officials say the driver of the vehicle was located in the vehicle.
ORIGINAL: The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is currently engaged in a recovery operation for a vehicle that crashed into a creak near the Mall of Louisiana.
Officials say a silver SUV was traveling on I-10 East and exited off Frontage Road. For some reason the driver missed the turn and went off the road, hit a barricade, then a barrier and ended up in Ward’s Creek.
Deputies discovered broken glass near the bank of the water. They believe the windows of the vehicle were shattered during the crash, causing it to quickly sink once it hit the water. The water levels in the creek are currently 25-30 feet deep.
Witnesses told officials they did not see anyone exit the area after the crash. They have not yet been able to confirm the exact location of the car in the water. We’re told divers will be sent down as soon as they locate it.
