BAYOU CORNE, LA (NBC33) — Assumption Parish Emergency officials say they will not be attending an unofficial community meeting.
The meeting was set up by community activist John Achee Jr. for this Thursday, Sept. 20 to give people living in the area a chance to get questions answered by officials. Parish leaders say they were not notified about the meeting until yesterday morning and won't have time to attend because drilling on a relief well near the sinkhole is almost to the top of the Brine cavern.
“The agencies are going to focus in on what's happening here to stay alert to see if there is anything that would cause any risks we're going to be here," John Boudreaux, Assumption Parish OEP, said.
Achee says that his request for a meeting was not meant to be a burden on leaders. He says six weeks is way too long to have gone without giving residents an update on the sinkhole and bubble situation.
"We have been attacked back for calling a meeting when all we want is some answers,” Achee said. “We want to ask questions we want answers. We feel like it's a good forum and we feel like it's way over due.”
Achee says he the meeting is still scheduled for Thursday night at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Pierre Part starting at 6:30 p.m.
