BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The city-parish is gearing up to make some improvements to the decades old sewer system and it's being made possible by a $ 45 million low-interest rate loan from the DEQ.
Officials from the sewer department say the improvements will mainly consist of patching holes in the current system, which should help with some of the major issues experienced during heavy rain fall.
“Currently our system is old,” Mark LeBlanc, EBR Public Works, said. “That means there are holes in the system and when rain comes in and our surge system results in back-ups not only in houses, but in manholes."
Once the loan is officially granted the sewer department will start the seven projects that will make up the improvements. Those projects will mainly take place downtown where the system is oldest.
The overhaul will also make the system more environmentally sound.
