BATON ROUGE, LA — Louisiana State Police, Troop A investigated a crash early this morning involving an 18-wheeler that caused a total roadway blockage. The crash occurred on Interstate 12 westbound, east of O’Neal Lane shortly before 2:30 a.m.
Troopers’ investigation revealed that Ernest Cannon, 43, of Houston, TX was driving a 2012 Freightliner west on Interstate 12 when he entered the lane shift at an unsafe speed. The truck and trailer rolled onto the center construction barricades and came to rest blocking both eastbound and westbound lanes.
The trailer came to rest across both eastbound lanes and partially across the construction barricades. The truck came to rest on its side across both westbound lanes. Troopers have cited Cannon for careless operation.
Troopers immediately began working with Livingston Sheriff’s Deputies, Denham Springs Police Officers, East Baton Rouge Parish Deputies, and Baton Rouge Police Officers to re-route traffic and clear the scene. Shortly before 6:00 a.m., the truck was removed and all westbound lanes were opened to traffic.
At this time, crews are working to clear the eastbound lanes of the trailer, which has extensive damage and was fully loaded with clothing at the time of the crash. Crews have been off-loading the trailer and working to get it lifted and loaded onto a flat-bed truck. Currently, eastbound traffic is being diverted at O’Neal Lane. An update will be issued when the roadway has been fully cleared.
Troopers remind motorists to drive safely, especially in construction zones. Motorists must be familiar with the vehicle they are driving and never push the limits. Although there is a posted speed limit, this is the maximum speed allowed by law, not a required speed. Each driver must understand the limitations of his or her vehicle, taking into consideration traffic, roadway, and weather conditions on every occasion. Safe and prudent driving is the key to avoiding crashes.
