VACHERIE, LA — Both a lack of seat belt and speed were factors in a fatal early morning crash in St. John Parish on October 27.
Shortly before 6:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police investigated a fatal crash on LA 3127 in St. John Parish where a driver later died at the hospital after striking a dump truck that pulled out onto the roadway.
Carl Sanders, 29, of Harvey, was traveling north on LA 3127 near LA 640 in heavy patches of fog, when it struck a dump truck that was pulling out of someone's driveway. Sanders, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Hospital where he later died from his injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver of the dump truck, Titus Stewart, 30, of Reserve, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash.
The Camry’s speed in the heavy fog was a contributing factor in the crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but routine toxicology tests are pending at the St. John Parish Coroner’s Office for Sanders.
