GONZALES, LA (THE CREOLE) — The City of Gonzales has been presented with the opportunity to take action and alleviate traffic congestion along Ascension Parish’s busiest roadway, Hwy 30.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has offered up $12 million to construct road improvements aimed at improving the flow of traffic near a number of businesses, including Tanger Outlet Mall.
Gonzales worked with engineers to design a series of three roundabouts, at the I-10 on/off ramps at the Hwy 30 exit, and one at St. Landry Rd. A median would split the opposing lanes of travel for the length of the improvements.
“We know we have a real traffic problem on Hwy 30,” said Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux. “We’ve consulted DOTD and a leading private firm in the effort to come up with a solution. This firm, which specializes in roundabouts, recommended the installation of the roundabouts as the best solution for our traffic congestion problems, and DOTD agreed. We will continue to study the problem and are receptive to everyone’s opinion. I am in favor of anything that will solve our problem.”
