The Department of Environmental Quality says this stretch of hot weather is taking its toll on the environment.

The DEQ has issued several ozone action days, which are issued when there are higher levels of ozone pollution in the environment.

The pollutants can come from a variety of sources.

A spokesman for the DEQ says there are things you can do at home to help whenever there's an ozone action day.

“A lawn mower or a weed eater is a bad thing; there are a lot of emissions coming from that,” stated Rodney Mallett with the Louisiana DEQ. “On an ozone action day, if you can cut back on your use, cut back on your personal emissions, then that will also help cut the overall emissions.”

Other tips include gassing up the car or using lawn equipment after six in the evening.

Also, if you barbeque on an action day, use an electric starter instead of starter fluid.
