SCOTLANDVILLE, La — DEQ says it may take some time to know exactly what caused the gas smell in Scotlandville.
The agency drove a mobile lab to Scotlandville to provide some instant results, but it's also doing a more thorough investigation back at its lab.
Crews met with neighbors to try to pinpoint where the smell was coming from.
They took portable scanners to check for chemicals, but they did not detect anything that was hazardous to people's health.
"We did - we could smell it,” stated DEQ representative Rodney Mallett. “We weren't picking anything up on the handheld, but your nose can pick up things at a lot lower level."
Aside from finding the place the smell was coming from, DEQ said people described several different smells, including natural gas and tar. Furthermore, if the wind changed directions, residents stated that the smell would go away.
