The Dalai Lama kicks off his visit to New Orleans with a series of speeches Friday at the city's convention center. The visit from the conveyor of peace comes less than a week after a mass shooting left 20 injured on Mother's Day.

The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader arrived Thursday. On Saturday, he is scheduled to speak at the University of New Orleans Lakefront Arena and deliver Tulane University's commencement address at the Superdome.

The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his nonviolent struggle against Chinese rule of Tibet.

The last global spiritual leader to visit New Orleans was Pope John Paul II, who celebrated Mass before tens of thousands of people at the Superdome and outdoors during a visit in September 1987.
