Norco, Louisiana (NBC33) —
A chemical plant is ready to be used again after nearly 20 years of clean-up.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality announced today that the Shell Plant off of River Road, east of the town of Norco, is safe to use.
The facility was built in the 1950's. Officials say over time, there were chemical spills and disposal issues on the 103-acre site that had to be investigated.
Years later, it is hoped that the facility can be used again.
"It’s one thing to clean something up and then just let it sit there,” said Susan Spalding with the EPA. “It’s another to clean it up and reuse it, and you know, bring jobs into the community and do something practical with the land."
The project began in 1992. It is the 22nd project to be completed with Louisiana's Ready for Reuse program.
