The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank gets a big donation today from one local fast food chain.

Over the past year, Chick-Fil-A stores in Baton Rouge collected coins from customers in cooperation with the change for community program. The proceeds go towards helping end domestic hunger here in Baton Rouge; Whitney bank helped count the coins.

The total amount raised equaled $6,000. Organizers say it's a testament to the local community.

"We don't really do too much,” said Nicole Sallomone with Chick-Fil-A. “It's really the Baton Rouge community that's awesome.”

“We can definitely use it this time of year when so many families re unable to share a meal with their families," stated Erin Swenson with the GBR Food Bank.

A survey by the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that more than 50 million people lived in food-insecure homes in 2009, meaning one out of every six Americans went hungry.
