The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Our Lady of the Lake Hospital are helping cancer patients and survivors stay in shape.

They’re running a program called CancerFit. The program is designed to help cancer patients and cancer survivors physically and mentally.

“Our biggest focus has generally been on stress and teach people how to let go of it, how to cope with it, and how to deal with it,” explains CancerFit instructor Millie Pixley.

The program includes Lifestyle Education, Yoga, and meditation techniques designed to help reduce stress. Participants learn about coping with stress, nutrition, and bone and muscle health.

CancerFit participant Susan Overton says the program has been beneficial for her.

“A lot more control of the situation, and physically, it made me feel a lot better. The exercise and the breathing,” she explains.

The center holds two weekly classes lasting about an hour and a half each. The program is free to anyone, not just cancer survivors.
