BATON ROUGE, LA — The Baton Rouge Police Department is seeking renewal of its status as an accredited agency from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). As part of the process an on-site assessment by CALEA representatives will take place in July to review and document the department’s performance and accomplishments over the past three years.
Agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session to be held on Monday, July 8 at 6:00 p.m. The session will be conducted at the Independence Park Rec Center, Room 137, 7800 Independence Blvd.
Agency employees and the public are also invited to offer comments by calling (225) 389-3836 on Monday, July 8 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Comments will be taken by the CALEA assessment team.
Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at police headquarters. The local BRPD contact is Accreditation Manager Corporal Britt Jones, (225) 389-3904. The Public Information Director is Lt. Don Kelly, (225) 389-3948.
Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Baton Rouge Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia 20155.
Law enforcement agencies must comply with over 400 separate standards and pass a thorough on-site inspection in order to be accredited. Only a small percentage of the nation’s law enforcement agencies voluntarily meet these standards. The Baton Rouge Police Department was first accredited in 1996 and has been re-accredited five times since, most recently being honored in 2010 as a flagship agency.
