BRPD Chief White removed from his position

Sources have confirmed with NBC33 News Police Chief Dewayne White has been fired. For several weeks allegations that his job was in jeopardy were denied. Today the rumors were put to rest.

Chief White was in attendance at a press conference this morning about gun safety. Mayor Holden made no indication at that meeting that Chief White would be leaving the department. However, a representative with the Baton Rouge Police Department has confirmed that he will not remain in the position.

A spokesperson for the Baton Rouge Police Department has also told us that per administrative policy Lt. Carl Dabedie will act as chief while the position is vacant. Chief White does have ten days to appeal his firing before a board, and has hired on attorney Jill Craft to represent him . A statement is expected from Craft's office on Thursday.

White was appointed police chief in June 2011 after an exhaustive search. During his first full year in office the department saw a small increase in homicides. He also launched the BRAVE Project, which focused its efforts on the 70805 area code.
