BRFD to recruit more firefighters

Wednesday, August 3, 2011 - 4:54pm

For the first time in two years, the Baton Rouge Fire Department is getting more help.

Fire Chief Ed Smith announced today the first Fire Academy since 2009. The academy will bring an additional 35 firefighters to the 535 on staff right now.

The chief says the newest men and women will help to lower the amount of extra work staff does now.

"The men and women that are working today… these guys are working a lot of additional shifts to make sure we have adequate staff every day,” said Smith. “By having these additional 35 people, that component goes away."

The search for candidates starts Monday. The academy will start in November.

The newest 35 firefighters will be ready to go several months after that.
