BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The plan to curb violence in Baton Rouge gains new momentum today, Wednesday, May 2. That’s because Operation Cease Fire announced its outline for BRAVE (Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination Project).
A press conference was held at 10:30 a.m. at the Baton Rouge Metro Council in downtown Baton Rouge. City leaders and law enforcement were on hand to discuss the details of the new initiative.
The BRAVE project will focus much of its efforts on the Baton Rouge zip code 70805. This area consists of 13.5 percent of the city’s population, but also accounts for 30 percent of all homicide cases.
The funding for Operation Cease Fire was approved last week, but it did not come without controversy.
The money came out of the special programs budget, money that the Metro Council took control of from Mayor Kip Holden's office back in December. The mayor's office said they agree with implementing
Operation Cease Fire, but they wanted to use the special programs money to pay a lobbyist firm, focused on getting federal money for Baton Rouge.
NBC33’s Kelsey Scram will have all the details regarding the BRAVE program on NBC33 News at 5:00 p.m.
