Boys and Girls club neglects to run background checks on at least 10 employees

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — At least ten volunteers with the Boys and Girls club of Greater Baton Rouge were not examined by the organization before they started work with area kids, reveals a recently released audit.
"Anyone who volunteers with or is working with the students have to have a background check done, they found ten instances where that background check had not been accomplished," explained legislative auditor Daryl Purpera.
Baton Rouge Boys and Girls club president Pat VanBurkelo said there is a reason why the organization didn't run checks on those volunteers.
"We hired over 200 employees last year, 10 or 12 of them are also employees of east baton rouge school systems, since they had already had a background check with East Baton Rouge parish school system we decided to not to do a background check because we thought it was saving us money," explained VanBrukelo.
The background checks cost just over $7.00 a piece to run. The organization is one that receives federal grant money though, and is obligated to run background checks on all employees and volunteers. Purpera said in this instance the organization is not complying with federal guidelines.
"It just shouldn't happen this way, they should do those background investigations and they should do them before the individuals come on staff or are able to volunteer," said Purpera.
VanBurkelo said, as for those who weren't checked that first time, their records are clean, and the organization is working to fix that problem now once and for all.
"We know that someone's already gone through a vetting process, we just didn't see the value of doing it twice, but now we are," explained VanBurkelo.
If the organization is found to not be in compliance with running its own background checks, it could cost it federal grant dollars.
