Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — A longtime part of the local Christian community is closing this week.
The Bible and Book Center, which is located on Government Street, will close on May 4 after 54 years in business.
It was the first store in town to sell Christian books and decorations. However as online retailers and big box chains grew, the store could not compete.
The store was also damaged by Hurricane Gustav, and its owners said, as hard as they tried, they could never recover.
"We kept thinking things would get better, and so we kept sinking more money into it,” stated Janet Dearman, whose family owns the store. “Now we're very lopsided, so even after closing we'll still have a lot that we have to pay off."
The Dearman family has already sold the building. They said it's going to hold some apartments, some office spaces, and an art gallery.
Before they shut down for good, they plan on holding a going-away party on May 2.
