BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The Better Business Bureau wants to help you cut up your old personal documents to reduce the chances your identity will be stolen.
This weekend, the BBB is asking everyone to bring your old personal documents to be properly shredded. It's part of their annual Shredding Day event.
The service is free of charge and a safe way to keep thieves from getting a hold of your social security number, credit card information, or bank statements.
“The idea is to shred everything, rather than to put it in a dumpster,” stated BBB CEO Jim Stalls. “When you just dispose of it through a garbage can or through a dumpster or whatever, it's going to give somebody an opportunity as a dumpster diver to perhaps retrieve your information and use it to steal your ID."
You can bring up to three large garbage bags of documents to be shredded.
The event takes place Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cortana Mall, near the old Mervyn's department store.
