Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) —
The U.S. Postal Service announced today that Baton Rouge will soon be home to a large quantity of the state's mail processing.
USPS said today that centers in New Orleans and Lafayette will close; the mail processing that was done there will move to the Capitol City as a money-saving measure.
A spokesperson for USPS said the cuts are needed to keep the post office a “viable service to the nation”.
As part of the plan, 3,600 post offices will close.
The four year plan could save the Post Office $6.5 billion. 120,000 people could be out of work, including 900 in New Orleans; the cuts could come as early as may.
