Ascension Parish officially opened its new training center today.

The new facility will have instructional classroom training for officers and will also serve as an operations center during emergencies.

It was paid for with more than $3 million from the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office General Fund.

Sheriff Jeff Wiley said the facility will allow officers from around the parish to be well-prepared to do their jobs.

"The name of the game is to make sure that professional law enforcement officers get all of the best training they can get whether it's weapons, whether it's ethics, whether it's leadership, or whether it's everything in between,” stated Wiley. “I can tell you right now, they can get a lot of that right here at this site"

The training center was used during Hurricane Isaac to house National Guard troops.
