Arsonist sets empty house ablaze near downtown Baton Rouge

A vacant house in Baton Rouge caught fire, damaging a neighboring home; investigators believe to be arson.

On May 13, fire officials received word of a house fire at 7:11 p.m. in the 1800 block of Birch Street. They got to the burning house in less than 5 minutes.

Upon arriving, fire fighters noticed that the fire had spread to a neighboring home, covering about 50 percent of the home.

The fire was under control in less than 30 minutes. The vacant house was considered a total loss, while the second home is thought to have an estimated loss of $45,000.

The resident that lives in the neighboring home escaped unharmed.
