BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — Area law enforcement lamented the gruesome murder they discovered Tuesday morning.
“Human life was taken,” said Col. Mike Edmonson, Louisiana State Police. “This simply should not have happened."
But they also celebrated a quick arrest in the case.
Jason Mascarella was arrested Wednesday night, charged with second degree murder for allegedly killing 33-year-old Roderick White, of Baton Rouge, inside Mascarella's St. Gabriel home. Mascarella then allegedly transported White's body to River Road in East Baton Rouge, and set the car ablaze, with White's body inside. Mascarella set his own mobile home on fire Monday.
The Violenct Crimes Unit, made up of several area law enforcement agencies, is credited with the quick arrest.
"This VCU has been such an asset to law enforcement throughout the entire area," said East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Sid Gautreaux.
The two men were strangers until they met on a social media site. Law enforcement won't comment further on the nature of their relationship, or what led to the violent confrontation.
Mascarella is being held in the Iberville Parish Jail on a $750,000 bond. He was just released from the EBR Parish Jail last week.
