ALLEN PARISH, LA (NBC33) — The Allen Parish Sheriff's Office has proposed a joint venture with the school board to place armed resource officers in each school. However, voters will have to decide if they want tax dollars to fund the plan.
"They (officers) will also be trained in first aid measures, automatic defibrillators, and also participate in DARE and bullying programs,” stated Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert. “We're also hoping to develop mentoring programs within the schools."
The push for deputy presence comes after the tragic school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that opened the eyes of many Americans in regards to school safety.
Sheriff Hebert's proposal gives each school a deputy at the estimated cost of $550,000 a year.
If approved, schools may have deputies as early as next January.
