AIDS awareness at Southern University
BATON ROUGE,LA (NBC33) — World AIDS day is Thursday and observing it is especially important here in Baton Rouge.
Southern University using the date to remind people that the Capitol City has one of the highest AIDS rates in the country.
Various organizations were on campus on Wednesday handing out information to educate students about the virus.
There was also an opportunity for people to get tested for HIV.
Almost 80% of new HIV cases affect African-Americans and organizers hope that statistic turns some heads, "We definitely want to get that message out that you need to get an HIV test because it's affecting African-Americans by the vast majority," says Darnell Pledge of the Center for Social Research.
Currenlty, Baton Rouge has the second highest AIDS rate in the country.
